The Importance of Learning

As someone who has been operating a small business for the past seven years, I have learned a lot. How to budget for a business. How to manage projects that I may not otherwise need to worry about. How to be my own boss. It seems that not a week goes by when I’m not learning a new skill or lesson that helps me be a better business owner, and that has been especially true as I grow my drone business.

Keeping Up

The business world is always changing, with some sectors advancing more rapidly than others. The drone industry is very young, having really only come into fruition earlier this decade, and it’s going through some rapid developments. Technology is advancing faster and further than we could imagine, with yesterday’s drones being replaced with something shinier, faster, and more automated. It’s this rapid acceleration that keeps me intrigued with the drone industry. I’m a huge nerd, and I like to keep up on what is the new “bigger and better thing”.

As someone who operates a small business, I have learned to take the desire to keep on top of the latest trends and apply them to the service side of my business. Learning new mapping software and photogrammetry options is great, but there’s the other side of things to consider too. How do I deliver a completed product to my customer? How do I bill them to comply with my accounting software? This is where learning is vital. You don’t want to fall behind your competition, and if you’re paying out for a bunch of different services, your profit margin shrinks.

My Goals for the Year

Seeing as how I want to make miDrone Aerial Services the best drone company in Michigan, I know I have to set goals. In regards to my education related to drones and my business, I’m planning on:

  • Becoming proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects

  • Learning how to increase my skills as a pilot, specifically with tower inspections and thermal imaging

  • Learning how to best create maps with accurate data for my customers

  • Finding the best way to market my company within the Great Lakes Bay Region

These are my goals for the rest of 2018, and I feel that I’ll be a better business owner and drone pilot because of them. I’ve actually been working quite hard on my After Effects and Premiere Pro skills, having taken some classes from Udemy to learn more skills. I know this will help me in the long run and I’m very excited to be able to deliver better end products to my customers.

Conclusion

It’s vital for you as a business owner and as a person to always keep learning. Sometimes it can be hard to find the time to learn those skills, but you need to do it. I recommend you develop a list of skills you want to learn and get to developing them. Let me know what skills you’re working on in the comment section below.
